The trace element selenium is mainly known as a natural antioxidant that works hand in hand with other antioxidants to protect our cells from oxidative stress. There are many antioxidants. Why is selenium so important? There are a number of proteins and enzymes in our body that rely on selenium.
These include glutathione peroxidase - one of the most important enzymes in our antioxidant network. As a cofactor of enzymes, selenium is also involved in the regulation of thyroid hormones and, as a structural block of sperm, is important for men's fertility. In addition, selenium benefits our immune system, hair and nails. Many good reasons to ensure adequate selenium supply!
How well we are supplied with selenium depends heavily on the selenium content of the soil where our food is cultivated. Unlike in large parts of the USA, the soils in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland are comparatively low in selenium. People who focus on regional foods, follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, absorb less selenium than someone who regularly consumes foods from selenium-rich regions and meat.
Pork and poultry in particular often contain significantly more selenium than plant foods, as selenium-rich mineral mixtures are often added to animal feed. Fish and liver are also considered good sources of selenium - as long as they are not contaminated with heavy metals or other harmful substances. The same applies to Brazil nuts, which accumulate radioactive radium in addition to selenium. If you want to prevent possible selenium deficiency, this is the right place.
With its inorganic sodium selenite, it makes selenium available much more effectively than organic selenium compounds and can be directly incorporated into selenium-dependent enzymes. One capsule per day is sufficient for a reliable supply of 100 µg selenium - highly bioavailable, pure and safe.
In addition to sodium selenite, each capsule contains 590 mg glucosamine, a natural component of connective tissue, cartilage and synovial fluid. We consciously do not use glucosamine from crustaceans and shellfish, but only plant-based glucosamine, which is also suitable for allergy sufferers.
Our tip: For those who want to combine selenium with vitamin C, we recommend selenium plus Acerola vitamin C. The simple reason: vitamin C (ascorbic acid) reacts with sodium selenite to form an insoluble selenium compound that our intestines cannot absorb. In contrast, the selenium yeast contained in selenium plus Acerola vitamin C contains almost exclusively organic selenium, which can be very well combined with vitamin C.
