The mineral potassium is the counterpart to sodium and is essential for many processes in our body. Above all, it is vital for the transmission of signals, especially in the heart. The two antagonists sodium and potassium regulate the fluid balance in the cells and our blood pressure. The minerals also influence the acid-base balance in our body.
As our diet generally contains a lot of sodium, it is important to maintain the balance through an appropriate intake of potassium. Foods rich in potassium are dried fruit and legumes and, above all, chanterelles. But bananas and - to the delight of many - dark chocolate can also refill our supply. Potassium is one of the so-called quantitative elements because we need around four grams of it a day - in contrast to trace elements, of which we only need very small amounts, or "traces". The SPE in potassium SPE is the acronym for trace elements.
The small quantity required says nothing about its importance. On the contrary: small amounts have a huge impact. When combined, the minerals ensure that many processes in our organism run efficiently. Potassium SPE contains the trace elements iodine and molybdenum - in carefully balanced quantities. The combination with potassium ensures an optimum supply, especially when there is an increased requirement, e.g. due to sport, increased sweating or certain medications.
